Arabic for kids in UAE can be challenging, especially for children who are new to the country and have had little previous exposure to Arabic. Parents often notice that their child performs well in other subjects, while Arabic reading, writing and homework take much longer. For many families, the difficulty is not a lack of ability. The real issue is that Arabic for beginners in UAE often becomes difficult when children are expected to follow school-level lessons before they have developed the basic foundations of letters, Harakāt, reading and vocabulary. This does not always mean that the child is weak in languages. In many cases, the real issue is simpler: the child is trying to learn school-level Arabic without having a strong Arabic foundation first. For students beginning Arabic in the UAE, the best solution is usually not to rush into harder grammar or textbook exercises. The first goal should be to build the basic skills that make later learning easier. Arabic for Kids in UAE: Where Should Beginners Start? Arabic is different from English and many Indian languages in several important ways. It is written from right to left, letters can change shape depending on their position in a word, and small marks called Harakāt affect pronunciation. A beginner may therefore be trying to understand several things at once. The student has to recognise the Arabic letter, remember its sound, notice dots, understand whether the letter joins to the next one, read the Harakah, blend the sounds and finally understand the word. For a child who has already learned these basics gradually, the process becomes natural. But for a new learner, seeing all of them together in a school textbook can feel overwhelming. This is why simply asking a child to “read more Arabic” may not solve the problem. The child first needs to know how Arabic reading works. n the UAE, private schools follow different international curriculum, but Arabic remains part of the educational environment, including Arabic classes for non-Arabic speakers. Knowing that ب is Bāʾ is useful, but reading requires much more. A learner should gradually understand how letters look, how similar letters differ and how their shapes change when connected. For example: ب – ت – ث These letters have similar shapes, but the number and position of the dots change. The same happens with: ج – ح – خ A structured beginner programme therefore needs to teach children to observe Arabic carefully, rather than memorising letter names only. Activities such as matching similar letters, circling the correct letter, finding letters inside words and copying simple letter forms can build this recognition. Harakāt Are the Bridge Between Letters and Reading After children recognise letters, one of the most important steps is learning the three basic short vowels: فَتْحَة — Fatha ضَمَّة — Damma كَسْرَة — Kasra Consider the same letter: بَ — ba بُ — bu بِ — bi The letter does not change, but the Harakah changes its sound. Once children understand this idea, Arabic starts becoming much more predictable. Instead of seeing a page of unfamiliar symbols, they begin decoding one sound at a time. From there, they can gradually progress to Sukūn, Shaddah, long vowels and Tanwīn. Reading Should Develop Step by Step One common mistake is moving from individual letters directly to long sentences. For a beginner, there should be several stages between them. A child may first read a sound such as: بَ Then combine simple sounds. Later, the learner can read short familiar words such as: بَابٌ قَلَمٌ كِتَابٌ Only after this foundation becomes comfortable should the learner be expected to read longer phrases and short passages. This progression matters because confidence grows when children experience success. A child who struggles with almost every word may begin thinking, “Arabic is too difficult.” A child who can successfully read five simple words is more likely to think, “I can learn this.” That difference in confidence can have a major effect on long-term progress. Vocabulary Should Come From the Child’s World Beginner Arabic vocabulary should not be random. Children learn more effectively when words are connected to things they already know. Useful early topics include family, school items, the home and everyday classroom language. For example, family vocabulary can introduce words such as: أَبٌ — father أُمٌّ — mother أَخٌ — brother أُخْتٌ — sister School vocabulary can then introduce familiar objects that children actually see every day. This makes Arabic more meaningful because the child is no longer memorising isolated words only for an examination. Arabic becomes connected to real life. Writing Is Important — But Do Not Start With Too Much Writing Arabic can be challenging for beginners because letters connect and change form. Parents sometimes ask children to copy full paragraphs because they believe more writing means faster improvement. For a beginner, quality is usually more valuable than quantity. A better sequence is: recognise the letter and sound first, then practise its shape; copy short words carefully while checking dots and joining; move gradually to simple phrases and sentences; combine reading and writing rather than treating them as completely separate skills. Ten carefully written Arabic words can sometimes teach more than copying a full page without understanding it. What Parents Can Do at Home Parents do not need to be Arabic teachers to support their children. Even short, consistent practice can make a difference. A simple home routine may include five minutes of letter or word recognition, a few minutes of reading aloud, a short vocabulary review and one small writing activity. Keep sessions manageable. For many children, 15–25 focused minutes can be more useful than a long lesson that becomes tiring. When your child reads, allow time to think. Avoid correcting every small error immediately. Encourage the child to try the word again and notice the letter or Harakah that caused the mistake. Most importantly, praise progress. Moving from recognising a letter to reading a word independently is a real achievement for a beginner.
